A catastrophic landslide in the village of Afaahiti, on Tahiti’s southeastern coast, has left at least eight people dead and several others missing after saturated hillside slopes collapsed during the early hours of November 27. The failure followed a full week of torrential rainfall, which infiltrated deeply weathered volcanic soils and weakened the already steep terrain. Authorities reported that a 30-meter-high mass detached without warning, sweeping one home downslope before impacting a second. The volume and velocity of the slide suggest progressive loss of shear strength within the soil matrix, compounded by elevated pore-water pressures and prolonged infiltration.
Emergency operations involving more than 200 personnel, drones, rescue dogs, radar equipment and endoscopic cameras have been underway, but work has been repeatedly halted by continued movements along the saturated slope. A secondary slide nearly struck rescuers, demonstrating the extreme instability of the site and the difficulty of placing equipment without triggering further collapse. According to officials, the terrain geometry and waterlogged soil conditions mean recovery operations may extend for several days. The victims include a three-year-old child, underscoring the severity of the event for this small hillside community.

French Polynesian authorities have launched an investigation into potential planning and construction issues, including whether the affected dwellings met hillside development requirements. Officials noted some houses were decades old, built long before stricter geotechnical regulations came into force. Geological experts from New Caledonia and Paris are now assessing long-term slope stability, with the goal of determining whether the area remains habitable and what mitigation measures such as drainage improvements, retaining structures or relocation may be necessary.
