On Sunday, Dec. 13, 2015, Seattle Tunnel Partners began filling the access pit used to retrieve and repair Bertha – the SR 99 tunneling machine. This video shows crews loading sand into a hopper connected to a large, flexible pipe. This technique allows workers to guide the sand into the pit. Crews then spread and compress the sand as they get ready to get Bertha tunneling again.
