Cyclone Gabrielle has turned deadly, after a woman died on New Zealand's North Island. Authorities confirmed the fatality late on Tuesday night (9.50pm AEDT), saying the women in Putorino died "after a bank collapsed onto her home" in the Hawke's Bay area. The storm pushed New Zealand into a state of emergency for only the third time in the nation’s history. Violent winds, widespread power outages and flooding caused devastation across the North Island, as the prime minister called it the most "severe weather event this century".
