Mexico's Popocatépetl volcano erupts again (video)

Following the eruption triggered by the M7.1 earthquake in Mexico City, Mexico's Popocatépetl volcano exploded again in the early hours of Thursday, October 5th, 2017.

The emission took place at 07:26 UTC, with fragments being ejected up to 600 m from the crater and an ash cloud that reached a height of about 2 km above the volcano's summit. According to the Washington Volcanic Ash Advisory Center, the new emission has resulted in a plume of volcanic ash extending 28 km west of the volcano. At 14:27 UTC, volcanic ash cloud was reaching a height of 6.4 km above sea level and moving west at 46.3 - 55 km/h.

Mexico's National Disaster Prevention Center (CENAPRED) said that "the seismic monitoring systems of the Popocatépetl volcano recorded 11 low-intensity exhalations and three explosions at 02:26, 03:26 and 03:27". The 02:26 eruption was captured in the video that follows. CENAPRED urged people to stay at a safety radius of 12 km away from the volcano, in the fear of ballistic fragments and the possibility of pyroclastic flows and short-range mudflows.

Popocatépetl volcano is one of Mexico's most active volcanos. It lies 70 km south-east of Mexico City and is North America's 2nd highest volcano, with a height of 5426 m.
