Massive Landslide Buries Petrol Pump on Jammu–Srinagar Highway

A significant landslide struck near Balinallah on the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway in Udhampur district, Jammu and Kashmir, on August 24, 2025. Triggered by continuous rainfall, the slope failure released a large volume of debris that buried a Hindustan Petroleum petrol pump. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, as staff had been evacuated after early warning signs appeared.

Traffic along the highway was severely disrupted, with authorities diverting vehicles to alternative routes. Commuters faced extended delays as heavy machinery and rescue teams were deployed to remove debris and stabilize the slope.

Petrol pump owner Jai Pal Singh Jamwal reported noticing cracks forming on the hillside between 6:30 and 7:00 p.m., prompting immediate evacuation of personnel and suspension of tanker operations. These precautionary steps prevented potential injuries. Fire Officer Sunil confirmed that continuous rainfall throughout the day weakened the slope and ultimately triggered the collapse. Rescue and monitoring teams remain on site, as the hillside is still considered unstable.

The incident highlights the challenges of maintaining infrastructure in geologically sensitive regions where monsoon rainfall frequently induces slope instability. Geotechnical monitoring, slope reinforcement, and effective early-warning systems are critical measures to minimize risks along such key transport corridors.
