Landslide caused by heavy rain leaves several victims in Ecuador

A very large landslide took place in central Ecuador on Sunday, the 16^th of June, following days of heavy rainfall.

Furthermore, the event took place near the city of Banos, roughly 135 kilometers south of the country’s capital Quito.

It has so far been made known that several people lost their lives in the landslide, with several sources reporting 6 fatalities, while the Associated Press claims that the number has risen to 8.

In addition to this, it has been reported that another 22 people were injured in the large-magnitude landslide.

The Ecuadorean Secretariat for Risk Management initially announced that 30 more people were missing, but it was later stated by their agency that they had been accounted for.

It was also announced that further problems were caused by the excessive rainfall in Ecuador, including the operations of three hydroelectric plants being affected, and a river overflowing in the canton of Chambo.

The same heavy rainfall phenomenon affected the better part of Central and South America over the past week, causing several more people to lose their lives, including another 5 landslide-induced fatalities in El Salvador.
