HS2 Team Trials Low-Carbon Clay Alternative to Concrete

The HS2 project team, working on the London tunnels, has embarked on an innovative journey to reduce carbon emissions by testing clay as an alternative to Portland cement. 

The trial focuses on repurposing London clay, extracted during tunneling activities, to replace carbon-intensive Portland cement. Through a process called calcination, the clay is heated and ground into a fine powder, transforming it into a viable material that can be integrated into concrete. Early results from the trial are promising, showing a significant reduction in carbon emissions and offering a potential solution to decarbonize the construction industry.

The preliminary results have shown substantial carbon savings, with the potential to save tens of millions of pounds on large-scale infrastructure projects like HS2. Innovate UK, which funded the trial, has invested £3.2 million in various projects to accelerate the decarbonization of the concrete industry. If scaled up, this innovative use of clay could pave the way for more sustainable practices in civil engineering, aligning with global efforts to mitigate climate change.

This trial represents a crucial step forward in the construction industry’s quest to reduce its environmental impact.
