First-of-its-Kind Soil Stabilization Enables Gull Wing Bridge Construction

An innovative and environmentally friendly soil mixing method has been employed in the construction of the Gull Wing Bridge in Lowestoft. The project, led by the engineering team, focused on stabilizing the northern approach to the bridge, ensuring strong and stable ground for the new structure.

The design team utilized a combination of mass soil mixing and Soil Mixed Columns (SMCs) to improve the soil’s load-bearing capacity. By using a double rotary mixing head to mix native soils, the project achieved greater efficiency and precision compared to the industry-standard single auger method. This reduced the need for soil excavation, minimizing the carbon footprint and cutting project costs.

The ground was treated to depths of 2 to 7 meters, with soil mixed columns ensuring enhanced stability and strength. Additionally, this method improved site safety by reducing vehicle movements on site, lowering the overall risk during construction.

One of the key advantages of using this innovative soil mixing technique was its environmental benefits. The method reduced the need for soil removal and transport, cutting down on emissions and project costs. The installation of soil mixed columns also addressed any soil contamination issues while providing crucial support for the bridge’s northern embankment.

This groundbreaking solution, the first of its kind in the UK, has set a new standard in geotechnical engineering. The approach not only ensured the structural integrity of the Gull Wing Bridge but also highlighted the importance of sustainable construction practices.
