A landslide struck the municipality of Sabaneta, just south of Medellin, Colombia, in the early hours of May 8, 2025, leaving five people dead and two still missing. The incident occurred in a residential area and was triggered by prolonged and intense rainfall that has affected large parts of the Antioquia department since early May.

Emergency Response and Red Alerts

In response, local authorities deployed emergency teams, including geologists, engineers, and rescue workers, supported by heavy machinery. Temporary shelters have been established to assist displaced residents. The regional disaster risk agency, DAGRAN, confirmed that Sabaneta is among the 72 municipalities placed under Red alert, with another 10 on Orange alert due to the continuing weather emergency.

Wider Regional Impact

The landslide is part of a broader crisis affecting the Aburra Valley, where Medellin and nearby municipalities have reported flooding, infrastructure damage, and displacement. Over 8,000 families across the department have been impacted. Officials warn that heavy rains are expected to continue throughout May, increasing the risk of further slope instability.
