Swathes of Spain and Portugal are on high alert as heavy rain and strong winds battered the Iberian Peninsula, bringing down trees and disrupting travel in the region. In Portugal, a weather phenomenon known as an “atmospheric river" – a wide corridor of concentrated water carrying massive amounts of water from the tropics – brought new downpours.
