China has opened the world’s longest expressway tunnel — the 22.13-kilometre Tianshan Shengli Tunnel — carving a direct route through the snow-covered Tianshan Mountains. Lined with striking mountain murals, the tunnel slashes what was once an hours-long drive to just around 20 minutes. The new expressway dramatically reduces travel time between Urumqi and Korla from seven hours to about three, while also setting a global record for the deepest highway shaft.
