2019 Monismith Lecture: Tom Papagiannakis: Pavement Analysis and Design: Charting a Course Forward
Lecture Other Geotechnical Tom Papagiannakis of the University of Texas-San Antonio delivered the 2019 Carl Monismith Lecture in May 2021. His lecture was titled "Pavement Analysis and Design: Charting a Course Forward."
The ASCE Geo-Institute (G-I) has established a Lecture in recognition of Professor Carl L. Monismith's contribution to Pavement Engineering. Professor Monismith's teaching and research career in pavement technology, at the University of California, Berkeley, spans more than 50 years. Throughout this period, he has mentored numerous graduate students who have disseminated advances in pavement technology around the world.
The C. L. Monismith Lecture will be awarded annually for outstanding research contributions in Pavement Engineering.
Prof. Thomas Papagiannakis had his undergraduate education in an in Canada working on Unsaturated soils as well. Tom then did a Doctoral Degree in Transportation Engineering/Pavements at the University of Waterloo which is famous in Transportation. He is a licensed professional engineer. Tom started as an Assistant Professor at the Washington State University where he spends some 14 years and was an Associate Professor and a full Professor in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering. He was also the Director of the Washington Centre for Asphalt Technology (WCAT) for five years over the period 2001 to 2006. Since 2006, Tom is a Professor and Departmental Chair at the University of Texas-San Antonio in the civil and Environmental Engineering Department. He is also the Director of UTSA Superpave Facility an AASHTO accredited one since 2998. A recipient of several prestigious awards, Tom is a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers and held the McDermott Professorship, University of Texas-San Antonio earlier and now holds the Zachry Distinguished Professorship. Tom is an Editorial Board Member of both the International Journal of Pavements and the International Journal of Road Materials. He is also a member of the Technical Committee on Constitutive Modelling of Asphalt Materials of the International Society of Asphalt Pavements, (ISAP) since 2003. Tom is a Founding Member and Vice President for North America of the International Society for Maintenance and Rehabilitation of Transport Infrastructures, iSMARTi, (2006-present). Tom has received research funding over three million US Dollars from agencies such as NCHRP, TX DOT, City of San Antonio, NSF, WSDOT, ASCE, FHWA, WAPA, HP and NSERC. An author of over 150 publications, Tom has recently published a textbook on Pavement Design & materials with Wiley and Sons Publishers (ISBN-13: 978-0471214618- January 2008).
