Numerous news outlets in Greece report on Saturday the 26th of January, that a waste slide took place at the Municipal Solid Waste landfill of the island of Zakynthos in Greece.
The slide took place following extensive rainfall and bad weather. A large waste mound, that was reportedly outside the permitted waste disposal area, failed completely covering and damaging a structure that housed the electronics for the gas collection system. The failure took place in one of the most environmental sensitive areas in Greece, the National Water Park of Zakynthos, which is the main area of the protected sea turtle Caretta-Caretta. More details remain unknown.
