A landslide and a wall collapse struck the Indian state of Odisha in less than 2 days: At least 7 fatalities

At least 7 people have died and 8 more were injured after a landslide and a wall collapse occurred in Odisha's Keonjhar and Dhenkanal district in India, respectively.

On Saturday, June 8, 2019, three workers died and one was severely injured after a landslide struck a quarry in Tulasichaura of Keonjhar district. According to local sources, the workers were loading murram, a form of laterite (clayey material), in a truck when the soil failure occurred and debris fell on them. The bodies were recovered by the local fire department and the injured woman was sent to the hospital. 

The district's police department is currently running an investigation about the collapse. Recent reports state that the quarry was operating without a permission. Moreover, according to other sources, a private company had been illegally mining in the region dumping murram in order to extract stones. Locals collect the material that is often used for the construction of roads.

The following day, 4 people died and 7 suffered injuries after a wall of a deserted rice mill collapsed near Dhenkanal town. The failure was sudden and debris fell on the road hitting local street vendors. Except for the people damaged, many vehicles were completely destroyed. The local market stays for about a week at that spot annually but due to disorganized management, the construction works were delayed this year. If the plan had worked within the scheduled time-frame, vendors would have left the region before the collapse.

According to the Dhenkanal district administration, a fund of Rs25,000 ($360) will be granted to the families of deceased people.
