A 50-60 m section of the Sasago tunnel on the Chuo Expressway collapsed in the Tokyo-bound lane, about 80 km from Tokyo. Probably 7 people have died and recovery is still ongoing. A fire that started in the tunnel after the collapse was put off 3 hrs after the collapse.
"When I was driving in the tunnel, concrete pieces fell down suddenly from the ceiling," one man told public broadcaster NHK. "I saw a crushed car catching fire. I was frightened, left my car and walked for about an hour to get out of the tunnel." The Guardian had a video of the collapsed section here, which you can also view below, in our Media Gallery of this article. The video shows a large concrete section of what appears to be the roof of the tunnel. The details are still not clear.
