A magnitude 4.3–4.6 earthquake struck the San Francisco Bay Area in the early hours of September 22, 2025. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported the epicenter near Berkeley, just east of the University of California campus, at a shallow depth of around five miles. The tremor was strong enough to wake residents across Berkeley, Oakland, and San Francisco, with reports of items falling from shelves and buildings briefly rattling.

The earthquake was classified as producing “light to moderate” shaking under the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale. This level of shaking can disturb household objects, be felt by nearly everyone indoors, and sometimes give the impression of a heavy vehicle striking a building. Despite the intensity, the San Francisco Fire Department confirmed that there were no immediate reports of injuries or major structural damage. Authorities urged residents to remain alert for aftershocks, with USGS estimating a 35% chance of a tremor above magnitude 3.0 within the week.

The earthquake originated along the Hayward Fault, one of Northern California’s most significant seismic features. Running for about 74 miles through densely populated areas, the Hayward Fault is considered by geologists as one of the most likely sources of a major future earthquake in the Bay Area. Historically, the fault last produced a destructive magnitude 7 event in 1868, and current forecasts indicate a one-in-three probability of another large rupture within the next two decades.
