Retaining Wall Crumbles in Kangra After Malwa Express Crosses

On July 21, 2025, a railway bridge retaining wall along the Chakki River near Dhangu in Himachal Pradesh collapsed just moments after the Malwa Express passed over it. The incident occurred during a period of persistent rainfall, which had caused significant swelling of the river. Eyewitness video confirmed that the structural failure began near the riverbank and progressed rapidly. The collapse raised immediate concerns about the stability of adjacent infrastructure and prompted swift intervention from local authorities.

According to officials, the collapse was exacerbated by heavy water flow and unregulated mining activity, which is believed to have weakened the riverbed and adjacent structures. Indora SDM Surinder Thakur noted that an orange alert had already been issued prior to the incident, and additional safety inspections are now underway. Adjacent roads, including the Civil Enclave Road, also suffered damage and were closed to the public.

Railway personnel began immediate inspections of the bridge to determine overall stability, while the adjacent Dhangu road was sealed off. Authorities from the Public Works Department, Indian Railways, and local administration coordinated to restore temporary connectivity for affected areas. The safety of nearby residents and schoolchildren became a priority, with rerouting efforts managed in collaboration with military and district officials. Ongoing illegal mining in the area has been cited repeatedly as a critical concern in the region’s geotechnical resilience.
