Network Rail, the government-owned operator, developer and owner of Britain’s railway infrastructure, announced on April 3, 2024, that they will be spending £2.8 billion on enhancing the network’s climate resiliency.
Furthermore, this initiative is part of a broader five year, £45.4 billion, plan to make the railway simpler, better, and greener.
The organization stated that the £2.8 billion climate resilience budget will be invested in recruiting 400 more drainage engineers, as well as weatherproofing miles of drains, cuttings, and embankments.
More specifically, 600,000 meters of drains are scheduled to be built, rebuilt, or redesigned to withstand the effects of climate change, while 20,000 cuttings or embankments are also going to be strengthened.
Cutting and embankment strengthening is going to include the installation of early warning sensors, while more than 300 miles are going to be renewed or refurbished, and another 900 will undergo planned maintenance.
Finally, CCTV is going to be installed in the network’s areas that are prone to flooding, aiming to enable better and faster response.
As for the rest of the £45.4 billion funding, £19.3bn is aimed towards renewals of old assets, £12.6bn towards maintenance, £5.3bn is going to be spent on support functions, £4.4bn on signaling, and the remaining £1.8bn is going to be kept as a “risk fund”.
It is worth noting that £29.8bn of the budget came from government funds, while £13.8bn was the result of train operator track access charges, and the remaining £1.7bn came from commercial income.
