Landslide leads to sinkhole formation and road collapse risk in Oregon

A landslide triggered by prolonged rainfall has resulted in the formation of a sinkhole and the closure of a roadway in Portland. NW Cornell Road, which connects Portland and Washington County, was shut down after ground movement affected the pavement structure.

The sequence of events developed over several days. Initial ground movement was reported when a landslide deposited debris along the road shoulder following heavy rainfall. Within approximately 48 hours, a sinkhole formed near the affected area, leading to partial lane closures. Continued ground instability and erosion led authorities to fully close the road between NW Thompson Road and NW Skyline Boulevard.

According to available information, both surface and subsurface conditions were affected. Rainfall and slope movement may have contributed to changes in soil stability and drainage patterns, which can influence ground conditions beneath roadways.

The presence of a sinkhole near the landslide area indicates that subsurface conditions were impacted. In such cases, erosion or soil displacement beneath the surface can create voids that affect the stability of overlying infrastructure.

Local authorities also reported similar weather-related impacts in the region, including additional landslides and drainage issues. These conditions have affected transportation infrastructure in multiple locations.

Road closures and safety measures have been implemented while assessments are ongoing. Authorities continue to monitor conditions and evaluate required repair and stabilization work.
