The GEMINI project, an ambitious €20/£17.3m initiative, is setting a new standard for sustainable energy across the island of Ireland. Over the next four years, this geothermal energy demonstration project aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from heat production, aligning with EU, UK, and Irish goals to meet 2050 emissions targets. Using the Earth’s heat as a local and near-zero-emissions energy source, GEMINI focuses on both urban and rural applications, catering to large-scale heat demands. The project will showcase four pilot installations: three shallow systems in Sligo and Belfast, and one deep system reaching approximately 2 kilometers in Grangegorman, Dublin.
Unlocking Geothermal Potential
Beyond immediate infrastructure, GEMINI seeks to transform Ireland’s geothermal sector by providing vital data, developing geological heat potential maps, and creating toolkits for decision-makers. The initiative also emphasizes cross-border collaboration to strengthen policies and guidelines, ensuring geothermal energy becomes a cornerstone of future energy strategies. Public sector buildings, including swimming pools, housing projects, and universities, will serve as testbeds for these innovative technologies. By demonstrating the viability of geothermal energy, GEMINI lays the groundwork for replacing fossil fuels with cleaner alternatives, ultimately supporting Ireland’s Climate Action Plan and decarbonization goals.
Driving Long-Term Impact
GEMINI goes beyond technical innovation by investing in education, research, and community engagement. Through collaborative efforts from 15 partners across local and national governments, research institutions, and community groups, the project aims to establish Ireland as a leader in geothermal energy. As Economy Minister Conor Murphy noted, unlocking the island’s geothermal potential will not only reduce carbon emissions but also enhance energy security and create a sustainable future for generations to come.
