Construction Site Tragedy in Panchkula: Soil Collapse Injures Five Workers

In a tragic incident at Barwala Industrial Area, Panchkula, five laborers were injured when a pile of soil collapsed during excavation work at an under-construction site. The accident occurred as the workers, who hailed from Bihar, were leveling a surface 15 feet below ground. Despite warnings from the laborers to halt excavation due to safety concerns, the JCB operator continued removing soil. Moments later, the embankment gave way, trapping three women and two men beneath the debris.

Authorities responded swiftly, rescuing the trapped workers after nearly an hour of intensive efforts. Four of the victims sustained serious injuries but were discharged after receiving treatment at Panchkula Civil Hospital. Sharad, however, suffered a leg fracture and remains hospitalized. This incident underscores the critical need for stringent safety protocols during excavation and construction work.

Preliminary investigations revealed negligence as a key factor in the mishap. The laborers had voiced concerns about the ongoing excavation, but their warnings went unheeded. This tragedy mirrors a similar recent incident in Mohali, where a building collapse caused by adjacent excavation claimed two lives. Both cases highlight the urgent need for accountability and adherence to safety measures to prevent such disasters in the future.
