Aral Sea Rebound: Satellite Radar Reveals Slow Uplift of Earth’s Crust

The drying of the Aral Sea—once the world’s fourth-largest saline lake—has long been a symbol of environmental loss. But a new satellite-based study has uncovered a surprising geological reaction: the ground beneath the dried seabed is slowly rising. Using radar data from 2016 to 2020, researchers from China and the U.S. have measured an uplift of about 7 millimeters per year, even as far as 500 kilometers from the former lake center.

When the Aral Sea formed, the sheer weight of its water compressed the Earth's crust beneath it. Now, with 90% of its surface gone, the crust is rebounding—a phenomenon similar to what’s observed in post-glacial landscapes. However, unlike brittle rock behavior, this uplift is slow and fluid-like, indicating that the lower crust and upper mantle in this region behave as a viscous material. It’s not just a geological curiosity; this insight gives scientists new data on deep Earth rheology and long-term crustal deformation.
