Millennium Partners, co-owners of the Capitol Records and developers of the proposed - 1million square foot - Millennium Hollywood project have agreed to perform additional seismic testing on the site, to determine if the Hollywood fault crosses the property. According to the initial seismic report, carried out by the company, there was no evidence of an earthquake fault in the subsoil, however, a preliminary seismic map issued by the California Geological Survey is raising doubts.
Millennium's geologists had previously taken samples on the site and based on their investigation, found no evidence of an earthquake fault crossing the site, where the two skyscrapers of the Hollywood project are going to be constructed. However, a preliminary seismic map issued by the California Geological Survey led to a new trench study, which started on Tuesday, upon request of the Los Angeles Building and Safety Department, before giving approval for the skyscrapers' construction.
John Parrish, a state geologist, had expressed his fears that the fault zone may be located underneath the site, so he speeded up the completion of mapping the Hollywood fault, as soon as the L.A. city Council approved the construction of the skyscrapers about a year ago . He reportedly considers the Hollywood fault active and capable of producing a devastating earthquake.
Philip Aarons, founding partner of Millennium Partners, supported that previous studies performed by the company, as well as another trench study recently completed in an adjacent property, on 6230 Yucca St., east of the site, provide no evidence that active faulting is located below these properties. The new trench study on the Millennium site will be performed by the same geotechnical engineering firm currently completing the 6230 Yucca St. - Group Delta - and is estimated to last a month.
