Vibratory stone column construction for the Vancouver Convention Centre Expansion Project was required for ground improvement of the existing site soils, comprised primarily of various fill layers overlying marine sediment and glacial till, to address dynamic and seismic foundation requirements. The ground improvement program performed by Hayward Baker Inc and Vancouver Pile Driving included over 80,000 lineal metres of both onshore and offshore stone column installation at depths from 10 to 32 metres below existing grade. Similarly, both the onshore and offshore stone column works utilized comprehensive test sections and testing regimes to determine the required installation parameters within this difficult coastal environment.
