Pile groups and piled rafts are challenging design problems in the sense that they are 3D by nature and that soil-structure interaction is central to the behaviour of deep foundations. A few years ago, full 3D numerical analyses of deep foundations were reserved to researchers or to expert analysts in large engineering firms. It is only recently that this technology has become a viable option to engineers in the design offices.
This session gives an overview on pile and piled-raft modelling options in DIANA (solid and embedded piles) and its relevant background theory and required input. A case-study will be presented on finite element modeling of different pile groups in a piled raft foundation of a high-rise building using the embedded pile technique.
